Everything that this program tries to do, it succeeds in doing. However, one cannot help feeling that it could have done so much more – greater inclusion of jazz chords and even modes and ethnic chords and scales would have elevated the program to something worthy of a place in our top ten.
And at $39 it is by no means a cheap purchase – many of the best programs reviewed here can be found at a similar price. Keyboard Chords, in contrast, is not a piano tutor as such. Instead it is a useful tool for pianists, musicians and songwriters and composers.
Each of the following chords, starting on any note and in any inversion:
- Major and Minor
- Augmented and Diminished
- 7th, Minor 7th and Major 7th
- 6th and Minor 6th
- 9th, 11th and 13th
Each of the following scales, each starting on any note:
- Major
- Harmonic Minor
- Melodic Minor
- Pentatonic
Chords are presented in a number of ways:
- Notation
- Keyboard diagram
- Note names
- Chord symbol
For some people, chords, keys and scales come totally naturally. For most, however, a reminder of some sort is needed most of the time. Whereas books provide a similar service for a smaller cost, this program can give you the immediacy and convenience of being on your computer screen.
It is likely to be used particularly by those who are new to composing and improvising, possibly students or self-taught pianists. It is also useful for those who already have musical experience but cannot find the right notes and chords on the piano.
This program has potential as a learning aid for students of academic music but, as we have already mentioned, by lacking the more complex chords and modes, the program eliminates this potential sector of the market. For a beginner however, or even a player at an intermediate level, the selection is ample. You will need to judge for yourself from the features list above whether the program provides everything you are likely to need.
Keyboard Chords.com is not for everyone. If you only ever intend to read music, the program is probably an unnecessary purchase.
However, for some people this could be exactly what they need to develop their chord recognition and formation skills. And the user-friendly interface and simple design should make learning all these chords a fairly easy and enjoyable experience.
