• 13 QuickTime movie files: Instead of the “hundreds of videos” that Instrument Master promises you get 13 short QuickTime movie clips. The video quality is simply atrocious. It made me a little dizzy in fact as the camera kept moving around during the filming. The audio is muffled and distant. Between all of the video “lessons”, you get approximately 33 minutes worth of video. (The average file length is only 2:30 long) There is also no structure or logical progression to course whatsoever. Just a random series of video clips that have little so say about anything.
• 13 MP3 files: These audio clips mimic the video audio in the QuickTime movie clips entirely. This is completely redundant and unnecessary, as you can’t see anything that is being discussed. Imagine that your teacher asked you to play certain chords for the first time, but you can’t see what he is playing. Yeah, it’s pretty slick.
• 4 scale illustrations: These .jpg image files show the notes in a few widely used scales.
• 4 music theory .pdfs: Explains some basic music theory and concepts such as rhythm, pitch, basic chords, and intervals.
• Jam Tracks: Absolutely laughable. After downloading and listening to all 10 jam tracks in the membership area, we discovered that they are all rap/hip-hop beat tracks that are from Jay Dynasty’s Beat365 site. Just try playing the piano to these gems!

Even though Instrument Master says they “upload new lessons and techniques every week”, we soon discovered that what you see listed above is all you’ll ever get.

However, though the game is quality material, it is more geared towards musical teachers or parents who want to make young pupils interested in learning music, most likely in the elementary level.

The game consists of twenty lessons, and at the end of each lesson, the students get rewards in order to attain medals- bronze, silver, and gold. The software is very well designed, and easy to use, and can store the progress data of up to 50 students at a time.

Though the site claims to be geared towards adults, the gaming software makes it fit only for young students, and maybe, and odd adult beginner.

Ease of Use

PianoIsFun is very easy to use, and quite effective too. The narrations of the lessons can be either listened to online, or alternatively, the files can be downloaded onto the computer. However, there are no instructions as to how to download the lessons or access the bundled audio lessons.

Ease Of Installation and Set-Up

The set-up process to install the game onto the PC is very frustrating. The software can be worked only on the PC, and not on the Mac. Also, it cannot be used on Windows Vista as of now, though it is expected that this will be possible to do in a couple of months time.

After saving a small file on downloading, the user is required to enter an e-mail address, and the registration key opens the format to be filled in. The most irritating part of the process is that the installation triggers a virus warning from your anti-virus program. The reason is that the installation is done using various hidden files, raising a false alarm. The files are not dangerous, and will not affect you computer in a harmful way though. But the whole fiasco can surely confuse a new user.

Content Quality

Piano Coach Pro is basically Instrument Master with a couple minor improvements. Once again, Jamie Lewis (a.k.a. Jay Dynasty) is behind this shiny new “Learn Piano Overnight” website. There are quite a few strikes against Piano Coach Pro that customers of the course will confirm: False claims, poor quality lessons, unprofessional instruction, missing lesson material, and the list goes on.

Though Jamie Lewis created Piano Coach Pro long after Instrument Master, it’s hardly any better. We really wish there was something positive we could report on this online piano course, but we can’t. Even though it’s one of the cheapest piano lessons we’ve reviewed, it’s still not worth half of what you pay, and that’s saying a lot.

A bit of a discrepancy, wouldn’t you agree?

Inside the member’s area you can either stream or download the piano videos to your computer. The video lessons are recorded at a low resolution, and audio isn’t clear at all. The camera moves around a fair bit, and constantly cuts in and out which indicates that many takes were necessary.

The lessons feel very much like Jamie is making it up as he goes along. There is no real form to the lessons or any step-by-step plan laid out for you to follow.

For example, the first video lesson they show introduces you to rhythm signatures, and the second one tries to get you to play blues chords and 7th chords!

To make matters worse, Jamie isn’t exactly the most gifted music teacher or communicator in the world either. In a single 2 minute clip, we counted him saying “Alright?”fifteen times! I know it’s probably just a habit of his, but it pretty much drove us crazy.

Between the 10 mini-lessons there is just over 35 minutes worth of material. With the price of Piano Coach Pro at $29.95, each minute of video footage ends up costing you almost $1.00/minute, which is even more expensive than traditional piano lessons.

Differences between Piano Coach Pro and Instrument Master’s piano course:

• Jamie Lewis does the teaching instead of Greg Evans
• There are now only 10 videos instead of 13, but the total video content went up from 33 minutes to 38. The quality of the lessons has not improved however
• You have the ability to stream the movies if you don’t want to download them to your computer
• The membership area doesn’t contain ads which permeated Instrument Master’s member’s section

Verdict

If you want a real piano course that will actually teach piano, Piano Coach Pro is not what you’re looking for. There’s simply no way you’re going to learn how to be proficient pianist from the handful of hastily cobbled together video clips and poor quality instruction contained within Piano Coach Pro.

Rocket Piano is a series of eBooks, games and MP3 files that you can download if you pay a fee and become a member. The eBooks cover everything you could ever want to know about playing the piano. The eBooks offer instruction for beginners, advanced play, finger techniques and exercises, music notation, techniques to optimize your learning, as well as lessons on how to play gospel and jazz music.

Some of the lessons have audio recording but they do not have a video or an animated keyboard. The videos that are included are not songs, but a view from over the shoulders of a player demonstrating a specific technique. The well-designed games included cover chord identification, sight-reading, and pitch recognition. Rocket Piano only offers email support but their response was quick and helpful.

Despite the great lesson material Rocket Piano offers, the product lacks some key features. It does not include the ability to progress tracking and cannot give feedback on performances. It is not compatible with a keyboard or other MIDI device and does not have a recording station.

The Good Point

Rocket Piano really does an amazing job at teaching you to play piano like a professional. If you have never even touched a piano before, no problem. It starts out as basic as showing you how to sit properly at a piano; and by the end of the first six lessons, you will already be playing a song.
